This has been one of my most successful lessons. Mail englishdisco at gmail dot com to download the lesson pack including videos – I’ll add you to the dropbox folder.

LESSON PLAN

Get them in 5 or 6 groups. Points / candy for winners.

———— 1 ————–
Download / stream the intro to Logorama (award-winning animation) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUYVx8e-AeQ. The swearing kicks in at about 1:15 so cut it before then. See how many Korean-recognizable brands they can notice. (We’ve spotted Pringles, Energizer, 7/11, Domino’s Pizza, Nintendo)

———— 2 ————–
Use this warmer to segue into “Which Logo” blackout PPT guessing game – points for winners. Some gap fill target language after each mystery logo.

———— 3 ————–
This all goes quite quickly, so next up is funny video time. *** I CANNOT UPLOAD THE VIDEOS HERE (TOO BIG) OR TO FILE HOSTING SITES (SCHOOL BLOCKS THEM) SO EMAIL ENGLISHDISCO AT GMAIL DOT COM SO I CAN INVITE YOU TO THE PUBLIC DROPBOX FOLDER WHERE THEY’RE STORED. *** Show them the attached adverts one at a time and get them to guess the PRODUCT, BRAND, and MESSAGE. For example, the product is BEER, the brand is CARLSBERG, the message is “Carlsberg is a reward for doing something challenging”. Drill the questions (“What’s the product? What’s the brand?”) as well as the answers.

———— 4 ————–
For the last exercise, the teams are companies. They get a mystery envelope (or paper, whisper in the ear, whatever). It contains one of the 6 “products” in the last PPT slide (vest, apple pie, etc.) They have 60 seconds to stand up and “advertise it” to the class without giving away what it is. Description hints include the questions “Is it cheap or expensive? Big or small? Can you eat it?” etc. Points for winners.

———— 5 ————–
There’s also a wordsearch if you wanna do it. Words are:

SELL
AUDIENCE
MOTTO
LOGO
SLOGAN
ANALYSIS
MESSAGE
PRODUCT
HYPE
TELEVISION
ADVERTISEMENT
COMPANY
MUSIC
TARGET
COMMERCIAL

Halloween Harry – Online Platform Game

There’s a great old DOS game called Halloween Harry.

Level: Elementary to Intermediate

Kill zombies, free hostages, and the English instructions from your “Commander” throughout level 1 are quite simple, eg “Look for an exit above you.” You can play online once you’ve installed the plug-in for Chrome. Enjoy, and try not to get addicted yourself.

What Sound Is It?

15 minute pairs listening exercise for any level. Candy for winners.

This is a sample pack of 26 everyday sound effects, animal sound effects and natural sound effects. You won’t even have to turn on the projector. Make them guess the sounds one by one. All effects are in MP3 format and have been labelled. The difficult ones are Match (a matchstick lighting) and Keys (the sound you hear before starting a car, followed by an electric window winding down). They may think Wind and Rain are TVs…

By removing the visual element of the class completely, you quit competing with K-pop. Weird thing is, it works. They all tell each other to be quiet so they can hear the next sound.

Music

First basic English, then the same conversation in fluent! The top two are “Basic” (subs and no subs) and the third is Fluent (subs only). Don’t make it too loud at first – the starting music is quiet on purpose. I find it gets their attention when they have to be quiet to hear it. Enjoy!

Transcript

What’s your favorite type of music? And who is your favorite musician? What is his name, or what is her name? Why do you like them? Have you ever been to a concert of theirs? And how was it? Do you play a musical instrument? How long have you been playing? Do you think music is important? Last question: do you want to be a rock star?
